The infant child was safely removed from the residence by Mobile Crisis staff, and placed in a safe and sober environment.

On April 18th and 19th Prince Albert Police joined law enforcement colleagues from across the province targeting motorists that were not complying with seat belt use legislation, or that continue to use cell phones or other electronic communication devices while driving.
Several speeding, equipment, and other moving violation tickets were written during the two day ‘blitz’. 12 tickets were written for seat belt violations, and 7 were written for cell phone use.

12-11023 – Criminal Pursuit

On Tuesday April 24th at 4:30am Prince Albert Police attempted to stop a 1996 Plymouth van travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes in the 300 block of 15th Street West. The van was initially travelling at a slow rate of speed. Once the police emergency equipment was activated, the van fled from police at a high rate of speed, continuing east in the westbound lanes, reaching speeds in excess of 100kph.

The van struck concrete medians in the 500 and 700 blocks of 15th Street East causing severe tire and wheel damage to the passenger side of the van. Despite this the van continued eastbound through the intersection of 15th Street and 15th Avenue, travelling only on rims with those finally disintegrating and the vehicle starting on fire. The 21-year old male driver from Saskatoon immediately fled from the vehicle and entered a body of standing water at that location. He was pursued by a Canine officer and PSD ‘Titan’ and surrendered without further incident. The passenger, a 42-year old Saskatoon male was removed from the burning vehicle by other officers, while on scene fire control was conducted until the arrival of Prince Albert Fire and Rescue.

Both suspects were placed into custody and will appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court tomorrow.

12-9932 Criminal Pursuit

Further to previous releases, the Prince Albert Police Service and Prince Albert RCMP were involved in a criminal pursuit on Friday evening, April 13th.

At approximately 9:55pm officers were in an unmarked police vehicle near Saskatchewan Penitentiary on Highway #302 West when they were approached by a male driver and female passenger in a Ford Mustang. The male driver was known to the officers, was in possession of an edged weapon, and was threatening to harm himself due to previous dealings with police. He fled from the area, and was pursued by police.

The pursuit lasted approximately 30 minutes, and involved members of the Prince Albert Police Service and Prince Albert RCMP, travelling on both gravel and paved roads. A spike belt was used successfully, and a successful negotiation was completed at the scene in order to safely take the suspect into custody.

35-year old Derrick Dale BADGER of Prince Albert has been charged with Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public Peace, Failing to Stop for Police, Dangerous Driving and 2 counts of Breach of Probation. He was remanded into custody, appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court on Monday April 15th, and was remanded back into custody at the Provincial Correctional Center pending his next Court appearance today, Tuesday April 17th.

Operation Hang Up, Buckle Up

On April 18th and 19th Prince Albert Police will join their law enforcement colleagues across the province targeting motorists using their cellphones while driving and not using their seatbelts. Both the Patrol and Traffic Sections will be involved in this enforcement initiative.

SGI has released statistical data stating that 13% of all injuries and 43% of all fatalities in collisions in Saskatchewan involve improper seatbelt use, resulting in 920 injuries and nearly 70 fatalities each year. Distracted driving, which includes cellphone use, results in more than 8,800 injuries and nearly 50 deaths each year.

The name of this blitz, ‘Operation Hang Up, Buckle Up’ was based on suggestions from SGI’s social media followers.

The public are reminded to use their seatbelts, and to NOT use electronic communication devices while driving. Turn your attention to the road, and help to reduce injuries and fatalities on Saskatchewan’s roads.

A reminder to the public that the posted enforceable speed limit of the Diefenbaker Bridge is now 40kph. This reduced speed limit is in place to reduce the impact of vehicular traffic on the bridge while ongoing repairs are conducted, and will remain in place for the foreseeable future. This speed limit applies to all vehicles. Please pay attention to the posted speed limits and slow down when crossing the Diefenbaker Bridge.
