S.W.A.T. - Special Weapons and Tactics Team
»
In 2004 the Prince Albert Police Service formulated a Tactical Team to respond to high-risk incidents. Policing has become very complex requiring specialization in a variety of areas. Fortunately the administration of the Prince Albert Police Service has recognized the need to improve it's ability to deal with dangerous situations thereby ensuring the safety of the public and police. Often times members find themselves charged with the responsibility of dealing with an incident where a higher than normal risk factor exists. The ultimate resolution of the incident may require the response of the specially trained and equipped S.W.A.T. team.
S.W.A.T. is available to provide assistance in any police related matter. The team works in conjunction with other aspects of the police service including patrol, crisis negotiators, detectives, canine and incident commanders. Together they will successfully resolve such incidents as hostage/barricaded person(s), domestic disputes, weapons calls, drug raids, warrant executions etc..
The successful conclusion of a high-risk incident depends on a team approach, good communication and coordination of tactical maneuvers. As such the team trains together regularly and is committed to staying current in the latest training techniques and tactics. The team itself is comprised of ten members who must meet certain requirements in force options , physical fitness and judgement components. Each member is responsible for other duties within the police service in addition to their role with the team.
